I used to keep a note of all the more surreal transcriptions I read - I think the best one ever was "He has lost so much weight he has had to live in a treehouse" which had somehow managed to come from a dictation that said "he has lost so much weight he has had to tighten his belt two notches".

It wasn't the adverbs I was getting at, just that they're sometimes redundant (you can't glance any other way than quickly as it then wouldn't be a glance, just to use the example I did) I tend to class it in with double negatives, but then I admit to being a grammar fascist!

Kate.Kate Porellinoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8198581514056172349.post-46306837630785084712010-07-06T23:20:20.000-04:002010-07-06T23:20:20.000-04:00[...] This post was mentioned on Twitter by paige ...[...] This post was mentioned on Twitter by paige tristan. paige tristan said: Yellow Beehives, Lipstick Teeth & Favorite Authors « Wicked Writers: Writers are like favourite foods – chocolate ... http://bit.ly/cCFsWn [...]Tweets that mention Yellow Beehives, Lipstick Teeth & Favorite Authors « Wicked Writers -- Topsy.comhttp://topsy.com/wickedwriters.com/2010/07/07/yellow-beehives-lipstick-teeth-favorite-authors/?utm_source=pingback&utm_campaign=L2noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8198581514056172349.post-30290878958650281412010-07-06T23:51:49.000-04:002010-07-06T23:51:49.000-04:00Congratulations on your first blog post Kate! It was embarassing but I think it helped my writing improve ten fold. I know I still have a long way to go, but she was definitely a major player for me.Anastasia V. It's a grammatical nightmare, especially since I can get led astray because I know what I mean, so it all reads fine to me but could well be absolute nonsense to anybody else. Another aspect of proofreading/editing is checking that things make sense and it's far easier to do with something somebody else wrote than with something I did!

Kate xKate Porellinoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8198581514056172349.post-66866112458973663292010-07-07T21:51:43.000-04:002010-07-07T21:51:43.000-04:00OH Yes! Something I do when reading my own work is to ask "If this wasn't mine, would I tell the person to change this?" If I say yes, I moan about it but eventually change whatever it is. It really helps me to catch my own lapses in judgment before someone else reads it. And yes, they still catch plenty of things too!Anastasia V. Pergakishttp://avpergakis.webs.comnoreply@blogger.com
